It’s not years, but smoking damages the body in minutes, as per research in the US.
According to the report, published in Chemical Research in Toxicology, after smoking there are rapid chemical formations that are carcinogenic. This study was conducted in the US, reporting that damages from smoking could be in minutes rather than years.

This study looked at the level of chemicals linked with cancer, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in 12 patients after smoking.
“”Professor Stephen Hecht, from the University of Minnesota, said: "This study is unique, it is the first to investigate human metabolism of a PAH specifically delivered by inhalation in cigarette smoke, without interference by other sources of exposure such as air pollution or the diet.””
Does Smoking Cause Mental Illness ?
People who experience Psychosis are three times more likely to be smokers, as per researchers at King’s College London.
The study also highlighted - “Although the association between smoking cigarettes and psychosis - particularly schizophrenia - has been acknowledged before, little attention has been directed towards the possibility that cigarettes themselves may increase the risk of psychosis.”
